Offshore Electrical Grid Layout Optimization for Floating Wind—A Review

Electrical grid layout optimization should consider the placements of turbines and substations include effects such as wake losses, power losses in cables, availability different cable types, reliability-based operational/decommissioning cost besides initial investment cost. Hence, optimizing levelized energy is beneficial capturing long-term effects. The main contribution this review paper to identify current works trends on electrical for offshore wind farms well analyze applicability found approaches commercial-scale floating which have hardly been investigated so far. Considering multiple subproblems (i.e., micrositing cabling), simultaneous or nested are advantageous they avoid sequential individual problems. To cope with combinatorial problem, metaheuristics seems offer optimal at least close-to-optimal results while being computationally much less expensive than deterministic methods. It that brings new challenges not (or only insufficiently) considered present works. This will also be reflected a higher complexity thus influence suitability applicable techniques. New aspects mobility structures, configurations interactions dynamic cables station-keeping systems, increased likelihood prevailing heterogeneous seabeds introducing priority zones regarding anchor riser installation, importance reliability maintainability due stricter weather limits, specific farm control methods reduce losses. All these facets crucial when thoroughly farms.
